50 & Simmering With Rage

Mel,

 

 This week I had conversations with three friends.

-All entrepreneurs
-All about 50 years old
-All in the game. Not sitting on the sidelines.
-All have had some degree of success. Respectable success.

Not making millions of dollars but they’re all doing reasonably well.

And they’re all, deep down, DEEPLY frustrated. Sometimes to the point of RAGE.

In all 3 cases, the conversation inside their head is:

The "Tall Poppy Syndrome" & You

Mel,

 

In the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, there's a phenomenon they call "Tall Poppy Syndrome." 

 

The story from which the "syndrome" originates goes all the way back to Herodotus about 2400 years ago. 


And it's not a pleasant story.

 

The gist is this. A ruler wants some advice about how to govern his city. So he sends his messenger to ask this wise guy what he should do. The wise guy walks through a field of wheat with the messenger. As he walks, the wise guy chops off the heads of the tallest wheat plants.

 

But he doesn't tell the messenger anything about how his boss should govern. 


The messenger comes back and tells his boss, "He didn't tell me anything, he just ruined his wheat crop by chopping off the heads of the tallest plants." 

The ruler nods his head and realizes that the wise guy was saying, "Kill all the best and brightest guys in your city, those are the ones that pose the biggest threat to your rule."

 

Today it's not just some ruthless rulers who have this "tall poppy syndrome." Anyone who takes risks and rises above the mediocre middle runs the risk of getting chopped down to size...maybe not literally, but verbally. 

 

And  US and Australian citizen (and consultant-to-the-consultants), Ari Galper saw Tall Poppy Syndrome in action recently. And has some choice words about it in today's guest blog.

It leverages ancient triggers that influence your prospects to say “YES”, much in the same way that word-of- mouth works its magic.

So how does word-of-mouth AND Jon’s Auto-Selling Principle work?

Two psychological principles known as “inclusion” and “rapport.”

Inclusion refers to the desire you have to feel a part of a community or group.

It’s the reason we tend to listen to others when inquiring about a product or service more than we would a stranger.

You may believe you buy after you hear some positive word-of-mouth is solely because you trust the source…

…yet in reality it’s primarily due to the ancient part of your brain called the amygdala that wants you to remain in a state of inclusion.

Using specific words on your sales page, in your emails, and in your VSL can trigger this same feeling of inclusion in the mind of your prospective buyer.

Your prospect literally becomes their own “word-of-mouth” referral person.

It’s not some bizarre form of hypnosis or schizophrenia…

…it’s simply because you’ve used some key words and phrases to induce a powerful state of inclusion.

Now, there’s one more piece to the puzzle: rapport.

Rapport is the connection and similarity you feel toward another person.

This is the second reason we tend to buy products and services from word-of-mouth, and it’s all thanks to the chemical release of feel-good neurotransmitters in your brain.

When in rapport, dopamine and oxytocin increase substantially, our brains then connect these feel-good chemicals with the product or service being recommended.

If you’ve ever felt compelled to purchase something, chances are this is why.
