How to free up 200 hours a year

Mel, In 2019 we hosted Perry Marshall Live in Prague, Czech Republic. Prague is a fantastic and beautiful city. While we were there, I visited the Franz Kafka museum. Kafka was a legendary novelist, a towering figure of 20th century literature. But Kafka was unable to earn a living from his novels. Kafka's day job was legal work for an insurance company. Several displays at the museum featured laments about his miserable career. And many of his novels deal with the soul-crushing absurdity of pointless and endless bureaucracy. The tension between making a living and doing meaningful work is NOT a new problem; it is as old as dirt. Everyone who has dreams has to pay the bills. The only thing that's new is that for hundreds of millions of modern people, living a meaningful life and achieving our dearest dreams seems almost within our grasp. …Which is why the world is dripping with trite advice like "Do what you love and the money will follow" and "follow your passion" and "if you do what you enjoy you'll never work a day in your life." Most of the time, if you "do what you love," the money will disappear. Yet at the same time, the world is also full of business books and formulas that reduce the world to tactics, strategies, systems and processes and spreadsheets. Those systems and formulas can be equally trite. The REAL reason we apply 80/20, build Star businesses, and engineer our lives to earn $1,000 and $10,000 an hour is so we can do our Real Work. If you said to me, "Perry, I'm serious about my Real Work. I'm ready to stop screwing around. I'll do anything you say for the next 3 years," we would start RIGHT HERE. We stop squandering time. We build your Road to Freedom. Then doing your Real Work naturally follows. I and many students and clients are busily and deeply engaged in our Real Work. I spend 40% of my time exploring some of the deepest questions in science and medicine, via Evolution 2.0 and Reversing Cancer. In 2021 I co-founded the Cancer & Evolution Working Group, a professional society now boasting 1500 member scientists. A cure for cancer is within our reach. “Sharp pains shooting through my arm and chest…”

Mel, My friend Tom, 30 years older than me, called… "Perry I just had a terrifying scare. "I felt sharp pains shooting through my arm and chest and tumbled to the ground. Vikki called an ambulance. They put me in and sped to the hospital. I feared I was dying of a heart attack. "I thought this is it? This is how it ends? NOW? Perry, my life flashed before my eyes, just like they say. "And you know what? The first feeling I had was being PISSED at how many days I had frittered away on stupid crap. And the unfinished things I told myself I wanted to do that I wasn't doing." "One day you wake to find ten years have got behind you…." When I was in college, I read about Isaac Newton. Regarding his stupendous discoveries, he said: "To myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me." When I became an entrepreneur, I realized that the only reason Newton had the luxury of asking why apples fall out of trees was because he came from a wealthy family. That was why he had time to think about "trivial" things like gravity. Not being from a wealthy family myself, I resolved I must must must get my bills taken care of so I could spend my life exploring and discovering. I knew this was what I was put here to do. I had to develop a life and a business that would ALLOW me to do that. If I spent 40 years punching the clock and working for the man, then in the parable of the talents, I would be the wretched slave who squandered everything out of fear and cowardice. How about you? What did you really want to become when you were 7 or 10 years old? 12, 17, 20? What did you want to be when you were a child? When you were a teenager? Seriously. I want you to stop and answer: What did you desire to achieve? What did you want to be known for? What mark did you hope to leave on the world? Do you remember? (Of course you remember. How could you forget?) What do you STILL want today? The real question is: Do you have the will to call out those dreams and look at them afresh? It takes courage to ask: What do you really want? If you DO still want to achieve something big, a legacy…then the next question is… Are my life and business structured in a way that will allow me to achieve it? Or are they structured in a way that is murdering my purpose?
