Perry Marshall Minute: “I got a guy…”

Someone who is trustworthy, competent, and affordable.

In Chicago where I live, when someone says "I got a guy" it means they know someone who can fix the problem you have.

Someone they've worked with in the past. Someone who is trustworthy, competent, and affordable.Having "a guy" for roofing, car repair, lawn work, HVAC, electrical, drywall…

…is invaluable. It's risk-removal.

Who do you trust more?

A person who comes highly recommended from a person you trust?

Or a person you found on the internet and have never met?

Duh, right?

Well, don't underestimate the awesome power of being part of a network, club, mastermind, association, or neighborhood, filled with people you TRUST. So, when you tell them you have a problem, they say…

"I gotta guy for that…"

"I know a woman who is the best at that…"

"You need to talk to ____ about that right away…"

"Talk to me after the meeting and I'll hook you up with my connection and we'll get that fixed…"

After the first two days of Roundtable I lost count of how many times my partner, Robert Michon, uttered those phrases.

In some ways, it's the most valuable part of being in a community of trust.

It can be worth hundreds of thousands, even millions, depending on the size of your business.

And it does NOT happen online.

Perry Marshall Minute: Bring your accordion!

Mel,

At our Roundtable meeting on Tuesday, Adrian was the first contestant in the "hot seat."

The group spent nearly an hour helping him solve the challenges facing his business. And then…

He broke out his accordion and played us a tune!

Adrian customizes and tunes accordions for Nortena players. The best players and instructors in this genre are loyal fans of Adrian's methods.

And Adrian is working on a world domination strategy. Yup, for accordions.

Adrian filled the room with his energizing and uplifting music and after his performance the room erupted in applause.

It was a great way to kick off the week!

Maybe I'll post a video on the website soon.

Perry Marshall Minute: Zero, Nero, Cero, or Hero?

How do you determine WHICH problems to spend YOUR time and effort on?

Mel,

Yesterday I suggested 4 "Living in the IS World" quadrants.

There are so many things in the world that SHOULD NOT be the way they are.

But how do you determine WHICH problems to spend YOUR time and effort on?

The axes were…

CAN YOU DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT? Yes/No

ARE YOU DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT? Yes/No

Then I gave you some questions to ask to determine the answer to the first question.

Specifically, "Do I have the resources, capabilities, network, influence, power, money, and/or platform to bring about significant change?"

(By the way, your Marketing DNA is a big part of answering this question. Every New Renaissance member gets the Marketing DNA quiz as part of their membership.)

If yes, get to work. If no, move on to the next "SHOULD" problem on your list.

So, how do you know if you ARE doing something about it?

This might seem like a silly question. But a quick glance inside the blab-o-sphere of Facebook or Twitter or Instagram and you'll see that many people confuse whining, posturing, virtue signaling and trolling as "doing something."

They are not.

Here are some ways to know if you're actually doing something…

  1. You're spending money on it

  2. You're spending time on it

  3. The results from the actions you're taking are measurable

  4. You are constructing feedback loops: You do something, you track the results, you alter your course based on the results, you do another thing. Rinse and repeat. No feedback loop? Hard to say you're really DOING anything at all

  5. You bring something valuable and unique to the problem (you have a unique or definitive selling proposition related to the problem you're trying to solve. Again, your Marketing DNA results can help here).

So, are you doing something about it?

If yes, keep up the good work, you're a hero.

A Hero is someone who CAN do something about it and DOES.

A Zero is someone who CANNOT do something about it and DOES NOT: but THINKS they are doing something, like spewing into the blab-o-sphere.

A Nero is someone who CAN do something about it but DOES NOT (The Roman Emperor Nero infamously "fiddled while Rome burned").

A Cer-o is someone who CANNOT do something about it but DOES anyway. They expend money, time, skill, and other resources on the wrong problem. (Like Don Quixote attacking a windmill. Don Quixote was written By Cervantes… "Cer-o"…get it?)

Planet Perry is for heroes.

Perry Marshall Minute: How to tell if you’re living in the IS world

In Planet Perry we believe in living in the "IS" world, not the "SHOULD" world.

In Planet Perry we believe in living in the "IS" world, not the "SHOULD" world.

Stop complaining about how things SHOULD be and get to work in the IS world.

We also believe in quadrants.

If you're familiar with my "Work" quadrants and my "Traffic Media Map" you know what I mean.

If not, dividing a problem into quadrants can be a quick and effective way to attack a problem from an 80/20 perspective.

So, let's look at the "Living in the IS world" quadrants and see where you're living…

On the vertical axis you have CAN I DO SOMETHING ABOUT? With NO at the bottom end and YES at the top end.

On the horizontal axis you have AM I DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT? With NO on the left side and YES on the right.

Let's start with the bottom/left quadrant. You should spend as little time as possible where you cannot do anything about it and you are not doing anything about it.

Now, this may seem like an oversimplification, but all you have to do is spend a few minutes on Facebook or Twitter to realize how many people DO NOT GET THIS.

Modern humans seem to want to spend most of their time in the bottom/left quadrant: Whining about a problem they can't do anything about (except whine).

This is simultaneously the easiest and most anxiety-producing quadrant to hang out in.

Easy because you're never going to be asked to DO anything (except whine). You're never going to be asked to WORK to change it. You can just cry into the blab-o-sphere and pat yourself on the back for "doing" something. And then get the dopamine hit when all the other whiners in your echo chamber start liking, upvoting, and favoriting your complaint.

But you haven't DONE anything.

Anxiety-producing because you're spending your mental energy on things you cannot change. Want to get high blood pressure, ulcers, and insomnia? This is where you should hang out.

How do you know if you can do something about the problem? Let's take Google advertising for example.

SHOULD Google advertising be easier/better/less evil?

Yes, but can YOU do anything about it?

Here's the question you must ask: Do I have the influence, network, resources, and platform to effect significant changes on this problem?

For this problem the answer is clearly NO.

Move on to the next "SHOULD" problem until you find one you can answer with YES.

What do you do then?

Perry Marshall Minute: Orlando, St. Augustine, Antarctica…

Mel,

On Saturday I flew from snowy Chicago to sunny Orlando and I won't be home for 3 weeks.

In Orlando I'll be attending Atlas Mastermind. I go way back with the guys in this mastermind. Back to Dan Kennedy days. They are some of the sharpest, most trustworthy, successful people I know.

We've been getting together 3 times a year for over a decade. I've called upon their expertise and support quite often over the years and they've pulled my fat out of the fire many times.

After Orlando, I'm spending a couple of days of R&R in St. Augustine and then…I'm off to Antarctica.

Looking at the list of people who will be on that Antarctica trip, I see the names of guys that I've been in rooms with many times over the past 20 years.

Experts who are now wildly successful.

That is not a coincidence.

The most successful people I know are the people who got off their butts, got on a plane or in a car, and got into rooms with other people trying to accomplish the things they wanted to accomplish.

And they kept doing it even after they became successful.

I believe that the discipline, willingness, and intention to put yourself in rooms with other motivated, fascinating, intelligent, creative people is one of the BIG keys to success.

And now that it's become even more of a hassle to get into rooms like that? The ones that persevere and deal with the hassles and STILL get into those rooms will be even MORE likely to succeed than the ones who sit at home and complain about the "should be" world.

In Planet Perry we live in the real world.

Even when it's a hassle.

Perry Marshall Minute: The Real Cost of Your Traffic is about to go UP

Way back when I was a wet-behind-the-ears manufacturer's rep, I learned a vital lesson.

One of the other reps in the office, Mike, got a connector designed into every single cell phone Motorola made.

HUGE account.

Three months later, the connector manufacturer said, "We are canceling your rep contract and replacing you with one of our inside guys."

It had taken 18 months for Mike to get that thing spec'd. Innumerable phone calls and drawings and trips and negotiations. Then POOF! Gone.

THAT is the bane of a rep's existence.

What's this got to do with the cost of YOUR traffic?

The same thing has been happening to online traffic agencies for years and years. This is the bane of THEIR existence. They spend months getting your Google or Facebook account humming and then you say, "Cool, thanks for that, we'll take it from here…bye!"

Same story.

And as the fight for REAL traffic gets more and more brutal and complex and downright dangerous…you can't have that kind of relationship with your agency.

You have three options…

Your "homework" is to think which one is for you…NOW…not next month.

  • If you want REAL traffic, you'll suck it up and do a contract where your agency gets paid well for doing well. You'll probably have to give up control, profits, and even access to your campaigns
  • Formulate a strategy for getting traffic somewhere else…not Google or Facebook or Instagram or YouTube
  • Settle for the traffic that's left over after the best agencies have scooped up all the real traffic for your competitors

Three options. One is almost certain death.

Which one will you choose. You need to decide this yesterday.
