Today: How to De-Bug Your Bad "Head Code"

At my old job at Synergetics we were developing a nifty new chip. Slick, state of the art, disruptive technology. We were drooling over it. When we told customers about it, saliva began to drip from their lips too. 

 

I’d say, “Hey, we’ll have this for you in about a year and a half. Isn't this cool?” Their mouths would drop open and they’d pant, “Wow, that is soooo cool.” 

 

At the end of the meeting, they were ready to buy…as soon as we could deliver the actual product.  

 

I’d leave without a purchase order. No sale. Because I was selling the future rather than selling products that existed. 

 

Vapor is always cool.  

 

But I couldn’t pay my mortgage with, “Yeah, we’re going to buy that in 18 months.”

 

So I said to myself, “Self, you could have lots of fun going around and selling the future …and not eating. You’ll feel awesome while all your customers tell you how cool your future technology is, but you will still be dead broke.” 

 

You can only sell the present. But I wanted to live in the perfect world of tomorrow.  

 

I wrote a series of blog posts called, “Fist Fight at the Board of Director’s Meeting.” It’s about me on the board of a software firm with similar “futurist” issues. The lead guy was all about the future. He got lots of angel investors to write big checks to invest in that future. 

 

But subconsciously he shuddered at the thought of ever hauling that wispy future into the concrete present. I could never get him to execute and get real customers to give us real credit card numbers.

 

That vision never did make it to the reality of the present. It is now a permanent resident of the past. 

 

I shudder to think of how many wives have had to live with “Tomorrow Entrepreneurs” like that all their married life. For decades the guy is a financial disaster, but he keeps assuring her “Christmas is just around the corner, baby.” 

 

And here’s why he does it…

 

Because if Christmas is ever allowed to arrive, if the future is ever allowed to become the present, it will be a disappointment. Disappointment is all the inner orphan knows. Better to put off BIG disappointment by not following through…maybe even forever. 

 

It’s not a conscious thought. But it’s a sub-routine running in the program of your subconscious. A piece of bad code that will run until you de-bug it.

 

In Amway I was not willing to admit to myself that the plan didn’t work. It was never going to work. Amway is where I heard the old saying, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.” Yet they were the guys telling me that if I kept doing the same thing… I would get different results.

 

Trapped in denial. Someday magic pixie dust will fix it all.  

 

There is no pixie dust for your bad head code. It won’t get fixed until you de-bug it. And the only way to de-bug it is to clear out your head trash. 

 

This is where you start.

And because I want to bridge the gap between commerce and humanity. Before the Renaissance, scholars focused on ancient works of mathematics and natural sciences. But during the Renaissance, ancient literary and historical texts began to command the intellectual imagination.

 

Suddenly, there was a subtle shift from "How does the world work?" to "What does it mean to be human?" 

 

And because, I want to bridge the gap between commerce and art. This means more than being a

patron of the arts the way the Medici were...it means seeing entrepreneurs as artists. 

Business as art. 

 

The only way to thrive as an entrepreneur in this century is to ask questions that transcend business, commerce, and sales. 

 

And I believe if one million people begin to spend one hour per day in "exploration"...what I call the "Renaissance Quadrant" of the new work paradigm...then this new Renaissance will begin. 

 

And we’ll transform the world…again. 

 

But I'll start with just 100 bold explorers...because I've only met a handful so far. 

 

Most people don't spend any time in true exploration.

 

Richard Koch does. And I believe his business insights are the best lanterns for our path toward this Second Renaissance.

In 1601, Italian artist Caravaggio painted "Conversion on the Way to Damascus." It shows St. Paul, knocked off his horse, blinded, lying on the ground, arms stretched upward. His horse looks down, puzzled, lifting his leg gingerly to step over the prone saint. 

 

At the risk of sounding blasphemous, my trip to Portugal to visit Richard Koch knocked me off my horse as well. Blinded me temporarily so that I could open my eyes to a new way. 

 

And when I had dusted myself off, I knew I could not return to the old path.

Ever pull an “all-nighter” studying for finals in college? 

 

Did you ever have a time when you had a “big nut” to hit to meet all your financial commitments by the end of the month? 

 

When you think of those times, what do you feel? A big ball of anxiety in your gut? A pounding in your temples? Clammy palms? 

 

There’s an assumption, an orphan assumption, that you can only meet big nuts with a requisite ball of stress sliding up and down your throat. 

 

The Inner Orphan cannot conceive of any way to achieve a big nut easily and painlessly

 

The Inner Orphan says, “In order to hit my nut, I’m going to have to discount my prices, choke down client work like the guy on Man vs. Food who chows down 46 chicken wings, and toil 17 hours a day to get it all done.” 

 

The orphan will never say, “I’m going to hit the nut by raising my prices and landing one big fat client who will erase my shortfall with one massive check.” 

 

Why does it have to go the orphan’s way? 

 

Why do we have to pull the all-nighter to get the A in Chemistry 101?  Why can’t we believe a sugar daddy client will just “show up”? 

 

I’ll tell you why. Because the orphan programs you to believe you have to earn it. And the only way to earn something in the twisted orphan mentality is to strap yourself to a torture rack.

 

I’m not saying that there’s no place for hard work. Far from it. What I’m saying is the orphan restricts our options for solving problems by insisting that grinding it out is the ONLY option!

“It’s five times more expensive to sell to a new customer than it is to sell to an existing one.” 

 

We’ve all heard the cliché hundreds of times, right? 

 

And yet, most entrepreneurs would rather spend time and money chasing after new customers. Getting us to focus on conversion and follow-up and selling to current customers is like pulling teeth. It’s just not as sexy as traffic, I guess.  

 

I used to think it was about the “thrill of the hunt”. Entrepreneurs must be hunters not gardeners, I presumed. But whatever it is, I know for a fact that in my own business nothing sells better than traffic programs. 

 

And nothing makes people hit the snooze button more times than “customer retention” programs.  Autoresponder Bootcamp remains one of my best-kept secrets. 

 

I wonder if the irresistible traffic itch isn’t an “Inner Orphan.” Is it wrapped up with deep-seated abandonment issues?  

 

My customers will eventually find out I’m a fraud. They’ll abandon me. They’ll see right through me, so why waste time cultivating them? 

 

So the everlasting hunt for new customers stalks forward…and the old customers just shuffle in and out of the revolving door. 

 

But, they were going to leave anyway, right?  What a convenient self-fulfilling prophecy. 

 

This “I’m a fraud” thing isn’t overt. People don’t come right out and say “I’m a fraud and everybody is going to find out.” They just doubt their worth. Afraid of being known. Found out. This always comes up whenever you raise prices. You can pretty much count on most peoples’ Inner Orphans to NOT allow them to overcharge you. 80% of the time that’s true.

 

My victory over this particular orphan has been a big door opener. I’m known as the AdWords guy (traffic), but I’ve always cultivated my customers and expected them to stay around and buy more. 

I made my name with traffic. I built my business with follow up. 

 

Do you expect your customers to abandon you? 

 

And do you believe that big wins can only come down the narrow path of hard work, stress and massive anxiety? 

 

If so, that’s a piece of bad “head code” that needs to be de-bugged.
