Did John's Anxiety Cause a Snowstorm in Philly?

Some of us have an Inner Orphan that whispers to us, “If it’s a big deal (good or bad), you must stress out about it.” If we don’t experience a certain degree of anxiety, stress, and even paranoia, then we’re not “doing it right.”   Sometimes the ‘freaking out’ manifests in some pretty bizarre ways.    John Fancher’s career (copywriter for Planet Perry) has taken an upturn in the last couple of years. This upturn is due in part to his victories over some personal demons.    But, when things go well for John, his “Inner Orphan” really wants to act up.    I recently invited John to a mastermind group I’m part of. All members are heavy hitters. All run companies that are 10 or even 100 times the size of John’s. I knew it would be a stretching experience for John. But good for him.    He emailed me saying, “I’m intimidated.”    I wrote back, “It’s supposed to be intimidating. That’s how you know it’s a good mastermind group.”     On the surface, John was optimistic about coming.    But strange things started happening as the meeting approached.    First he got sick. John rarely gets sick. Full on head cold, chest cold. Hacking and wheezing. The works.    OK, that’s not such a crazy coincidence since this was January in Chicago.    But then the personal demons started beating their drums and blowing their kazoos. John said the “triggers” were more powerful than they had been for years…incessant…to the point where it was difficult for him to sleep.   When you’re ill, the last thing you need is more stress and less sleep!   Then, the weirdest part of all: John got to O’Hare for his flight to Orlando and found out it was delayed EIGHT HOURS.    John had planned to arrive in Orlando with ample time to check into the hotel, have dinner and get to bed at a reasonable hour. Now, his plane would arrive in Orlando at 4AM.    Reached the hotel at 5 am. Slept until 7 am.    Sick, working on two hours of sleep, mixing and mingling with an intimidating bunch of people he’s never met. (An introvert’s dream!)   I’m not saying John’s Inner Orphan caused the snowstorm in Philadelphia that delayed his flight from Chicago to Orlando by 8 hours.    (Though I wouldn’t absolutely rule out the possibility!)    But I am saying our Inner Orphans can do some pretty bizarre stuff. When situations arise that don’t fit their interpretation of reality they can throw a tantrum.     There was zero reason this “big day” had to be met with “big anxiety.” Consciously at least, John agreed. But subconsciously, his Inner Orphan was screaming, “Hey mom, why aren’t we freaking out? Why the Rat Kept Hitting the Crack

Mel,   Remember those anti-drug commercials back in the 1980s?    The Partnership for a Drug-Free America ran a series of public service announcements showing a rat in a cage. The voice over said something like, “Only one drug is so addictive that laboratory rats use it and use it and use it until dead. It’s called cocaine and it can do the same to you.” All while showing images of a poor white rat shuddering and dying.    A lurid demonstration of how powerful and dangerous the addictive chemicals in cocaine can be.    Point well made.   Or was it?    In his book, Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs, Johann Hari tells of another experiment with rats and cocaine.    Only this time, they didn’t put one lonely rat in a bare cage. They put many rats together and gave them lots of interesting things to do.    Result?   The rats didn’t hit the cocaine nearly as hard. Addiction and death rates were only 25% what they were in the “isolation” experiments.    Now, of course, the second experiments don’t prove that cocaine is not dangerous.    They prove that addictive substances are far less dangerous to us when we have a support system. When we have accountability. Connection. And lots of rewarding, non-addictive activities to engage in.     There’s a reason I refer to the entrepreneurial addiction to work ethic as a “hamster wheel.”    When all you have in your cage is cocaine, you’re going to hit that pipe. When all you have in your cage is the wheel, you’re going to spin and spin and spin until dead.    When you’re not connected to others who also trying to put down the crack pike of 60-hour weeks, you’re going to smoke up. Why You Crap on Christmas

Ever have a big, ripe, juicy strawberry just sitting there ready to savor, and then just…squash it? Step on it? The "Control Paradox" & the Case AGAINST Working One Hour a Day

It will be chaos. I'll be bankrupt in 6 months."   That's right. Accountability – a peer group that is adopting this completely different lifestyle and business mindset with you. Without this, you'll be susceptible to the siren song of the "work ethic."   3. Tangible steps to wean yourself off of the Hamster Wheel.
