"Well-Rounded" Mediocrity And The Tyranny Of The Bell

Mel,

In modern education we have this notion of helping students become "well rounded."

This is accomplished by ringing a bell. At eight o'clock in the morning, the bell rings and school begins. The teacher lectures, and you spend the last 15 minutes of class working on her assignment.

Just when you start to get some momentum going, the bell rings again and the period is over. Now it's time for math.

50 minutes later the bell rings and it's time for gym.

50 minutes later the bell rings and you're in "social studies" (as opposed to history, which was phased out).

Then comes lunch—everything spoon-fed and compartmentalized.

The bell conditions kids to never spend more than an hour on anything. It prevents them from ever becoming interested or passionate about any one thing—just passively involved in a little bit of everything.

"Well rounded" often just means aloof and disinterested. Those inane textbooks and Catcher in the Rye and Death of a Salesman condition young minds to believe that all books are boring and irrelevant.

When I was a junior in high school, my marketing instructor Mr. Venema heard that I was operating a speaker business, and invited me to give a talk to our class about my company.

I toted in my 400 watt Phase Linear amplifier and a brand new pair of speakers, and class started that day with the frontal attack of Tom Sawyer (full digital recording, splendid for its time). A surprised and delighted audience of fellow students jolted backward in their chairs and enjoyed a welcome diversion from the usual class routine.

Mr. Venema was amazed that a gangly 17-year-old kid could be doing something so ambitious.

To me it didn't seem all that profound, and his amazement puzzled me.

But looking back I realize that this technical, musical and entrepreneurial journey was the natural consequence of a labor of love.

I was deeply interested in something, while all my friends were biding their time in the Matrix, just trying to pass a class by day and watch TV by night.

They were being educated about everything, but learning next to nothing.

I was searching for everything I could possibly find about ONE thing, and in the process, learning something about everything.

As adults we've traded the clanging school bell for a chirping smartphone, but the effect is the same:

Bouncing from Facebook to Twitter to YouTube and chasing the latest traffic hack and conversion boost makes for one frazzled and distracted biz owner.

Yes, social media HAS splintered the media landscape. More and more you must get your business on multiple channels to survive.

But that doesn't mean YOU have to be the wizard behind the curtain who's pulling all those strings.

I exhort you: Don't try to go it alone.

Seek out the things you're good at and passionate about. Go deep on them.

And for the rest—get help.

It doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg, either. You can form strategic alliances with other entrepreneurs.

Head over to Marketers 24/7 and throw up a "help wanted" post with an offer to barter your skills.

If copywriting's your thing, see if you can trade with someone who can rock a YouTube campaign for you.

Reject the bell and it's "inch deep and mile wide" mediocrity.

And focus on the skills and passions only YOU bring to your business.

Carpe Diem,

Perry Marshall

Quantum Physics, Masterminds & God

Mel,

Adam Libman is a long-time Planet Perry veteran, a Jewish guy who went from total destitution to high cotton. He’s created a bunch of fantastic problems for himself by applying 80/20 to the nth degree.

Adam runs a tax consulting business in southern California. He writes:

“Perry I am writing a book on Jewish wealth, and why Jews are wealthy. I've got a valuable insight I think is valuable to you and your Roundtable.

Jews can only say certain prayers unless there are 10 people present.  We call it a minyan.

Torah is only read out loud publicly when 10 people are present.

It is said from ancient Jewish wisdom that God's feminine presence can only dwell when 10 people come together. This is creates what they call "kavanah" which is intention or "direction of the heart.” Suspend that idea in your mind's eye.

You write, and John Rohn also says, "We are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with".

It is the unspoken reason to join a Mastermind: "Increase the quality of your friend network, and make more money". But why?

No good public answers, in my opinion. But I've got it for you now:

Joining a mastermind allows you to enter a sphere of influence in which your consciousness is expanded and elevated by others, especially if you are at the "bottom".

But why?

Quantum Entanglement.

When a group comes together in "coherence", like a mastermind, the consciousness of each person entangles with each other member, and thereby creates a higher-level consciousness that elevates everybody.

This is the "brain on fire" that you write about.  I insist, you MUST have quality people with a certain level of "consciousness" in "coherence" with each other. In person. Doesn’t happen via email. Doesn’t come from reading a book. This is what is meant by "kavanah.”

When this happens, "miracles" can happen. In other words... the "impossible” occurs. This is an "emergent phenomena." Something greater than the sum of the parts.

1) Perry's job is to create a safe space to allow everybody’s consciousness to expand into each other’s.

2) Everybody affects everybody.  Be careful who you let in.

3) Perry's job is to get everybody in coherence with each other, and with the group together.

4) The focus and attention of each person is important when a person is presenting.  You’re mindful of everyone else’s energy level and stamina

As a person's consciousness increases, their ability to effect manifest the reality they choose, rises in proportion.

So, the secret sauce is mastering "how to use your consciousness to manifest the reality you choose".

In other words, larger consciousness can create more, affect more change, affect greater influence.... which CAN translate to making more money.”

We have deliberately re-engineered Roundtable for a total Kavanah experience. When members arrive at the airport, a Black Car picks you up and you have nothing else to worry about for the next two days.

We take care of your room (which is not in a hotel, it’s in a gorgeous mansion far from the city) and everyone spends 48 hours in total immersion.

Roundtable 1 is full and commenced in January. Roundtable 2 is taking applications and will commence soon.

We cannot accept everyone who applies. We can however assure you that everyone who makes the cut is a PLAYER who will contribute to a fantastic group experience.

To begin the application process, call Tiffany +1(312)437-8433.

If you are not part of a focused mastermind group where the leader and numerous members are significantly ahead of you, then you are standing on the garden hose praying for rain.

I’ve never seen any marketing mastermind with a wider array of industries and specialties. The combination of Google advertising, Facebook ads and 80/20 brings an enormous diversity of experience. We host razor-sharp entrepreneurs from all over the globe and it’s a HOT community.

Intelligent Trees, Gangrenous Limbs and the 120/20 Profitability Shortcut

Mel,

Trees are a whole lot smarter than we give them credit for.

When a tree senses that one of its old branches is sick, it doesn't marshal all its energy to fight the disease. And it doesn't shunt precious nutrients away from the healthy, fast-growing leaves that produce food for the entire tree.

Instead, it triggers an arboreal "nuclear option"... a defensive mechanism that severs the flow of nutrients to the branch. This walls off the decay before it can spread to the roots and kill the tree where it stands.

Trees literally amputate their own gangrenous limbs—on purpose.

Contrast that to the way most business owners deal with just about any sign of dysfunction in their business: ailing product lines, infectious customers, toxic employees.

The typical biz owner pours more and more resources into the infected area, putting the entire business at risk.

Just how damaging is this knee jerk "all hands on deck" reaction?

Ponder this mind-bender, courtesy of 80/20 math:

You know that 80% of your revenue comes from the top 20% of your products.

BUT...

That same 20% slice is also responsible for churning out 120% of your PROFIT.

Which means that you're bleeding out on that bottom 10%.

Most businesses could become much more profitable simply by jettisoning their least successful offerings.

This holds true in all areas of your business—not just your product lines.

The bottom 10% of your customers are costing you far more in support and damage to your reputation than they're worth.

The bottom 10% of your employees are wasting much more time cleaning up their messes than they're "saving" you by taking tasks off your plate.

The bottom 10% of your "great ideas" are costing you dearly by siphoning off time and energy from what will truly move the needle.

There's a very good reason why members in my Roundtable group see an average growth of 38%.

It's not just because they get better advice for their marketing, although we often roll up our sleeves and tackle marketing problems.

It's because 3 times a year, Roundtable members gather together,  fire up their chainsaws and ruthlessly lop off the unproductive parts of their business.

They cut out the rotting product lines that are draining their resources, and slice off the bad systems and habits that are sucking up their productivity.

It takes intestinal fortitude to amputate parts of your business like this—to systematically eliminate the weakest links in your business.

But when you do, you'll see that your business finally has the light, air and nutrients it needs to grow.

Carpe Diem,

Perry Marshall

PS: Contact Tiffany@PerryMarshall.com to apply for Roundtable 2 starting in May

Live Fire & the Principle of the Slight Edge

Mel,

100 meter sprint at the Olympics. 2012.

Gold: 9.63 seconds

Silver: 9.69 seconds

Bronze: 9.79 seconds

The reward for gold? Endorsements, speaking engagements, world tour. Your name on millions tennis shoes.

The reward for silver and bronze? Free first class tickets for the trip home.

It’s like the movie Glengarry Glen Ross. “First prize, brand new Cadillac. Second prize, a brand new set of steak knives. Third prize - you’re fired!”

It’s sooooo tempting to cheat your education and preparation. Hey, if the difference between 1st and 2nd place is only 0.06 seconds, you can bridge that gap with OPTIMISM… right?

Well, that’s what most people rationalize to themselves. They miss that slight edge - and the cost is exponential.

I don’t see too many people slaying it who are hiding in their caves. The irony of online business is… the slight edge usually comes OFFLINE.

There is an ethereal special magic. I don’t know how to define it, I just know it when I see it. Putting other winners in a room together is unlike any other kind of input, stimulation or experience.

You walk in 5 foot 10 and you walk out 6 foot 10. I’ve witnessed this over and over. I’ve experienced it and it’s just true.

There’s no substitute.

And the harder you fought to get there, the bigger the mojo.

I’m hosting a new kind of experience, 80/20 Marketing Lab Live, in Chicago. It’s an immersion with six others. Not just in our gathering in Chicago, but also on a series of live online focused trainings. It’s a community, it’s brain-on-fire, it’s a mojo boost. It’s the slight edge.

If the difference between winning and losing is 0.06 seconds, then let’s get on with winning:
