What RIddles Are You Trying to Solve?

The most important question you can ask about your business is, "What questions am I asking?"

 

Most marketers get stuck asking questions about how to make incremental improvements to their business...

  • How can I increase my click through rate by a point or two?
  • How can I get 10% more leads on my opt in page?
  • How can I write better sales copy to get 3% more conversions on my order page?

Good questions to ask. But most of them already have answers. 

 

The only way to build a real business is to pose riddles that don't already have answers. 

 

At our last Roundtable meeting, new member Stew told us about a riddle he solved that could alter his entire industry. 


Rather than ask, "How can I make incremental improvements?", he asked, "How can I build a defensible, impenetrable, competitive advantage?" 

 

The answer was a completely new process for manufacturing parts. A process that will take parts inventory from 10,000 down to 100. It will slash delivery times from 3 weeks to 24 hours. 

 

And he can patent it. 

 

And Stew works in a traditional manufacturing industry. People have been buying these parts for 100 years. 

 

Why didn't somebody think of this before Stew? 

Because they were too busy asking the wrong questions. 


What questions are you asking? How long before your competitor solves a riddle and pulls your industry out from under your feet? 

 

Don't ask answered questions, solve riddles.

I got a call from a guy who used to be in Planet Perry years ago, dropped out of sight for a while…and recently resurfaced. 

 

He told me his harrowing story of bankruptcy, divorce…head trash city. 

 

But now he’s back up and running, in a good niche, doing well. 

 

What turned it around? 

 

Well, he’d been listening to a lot of the Richard Koch work-one-hour-a-day stuff we presented last fall and it really hit home with him. 

 

He used to be a burn-the-candle-at-both-ends guy. 80-100 hours per week.  No problem that can’t be solved with MASSIVE ACTION. 

 

And he stripped his gears and crashed. Personally and professionally. 

 

But now he says that when things get stressful, he takes a walk. He slows down. He breathes. He plays. 

 

He rests. 

 

And the solutions come to him without MASSIVE hypertension. 

 

He has overcome his fear of “idleness”, of “inaction”, of “appearing lazy.”  He’s addressed his head trash and given himself permission to respond to problems rather than react to them.

 

He’s healthier. And his business is flourishing. 

 

I’ve never had a crash like this guy, but I have noticed that whenever I need to get to the “next level” with my business, I always need TWO kinds of breakthroughs. 

 

A business breakthrough, of course. 

 

But more importantly, a personal breakthrough. 

 

Whenever I’ve needed to scale the next mountain, there’s been some serious head trash I’ve needed to get rid of before I could start ascending. 

 

Wherever you are with your business, I can assure you, there’s some trash you’ll need to sort out before you move on.

 

And the Bridges Brothers (who coached our Bobsled Run folks this year) have sorted out plenty of head trash, managed their fears, and scaled several business mountains.

I'm Not Calling You "Chicken", But...

“I have to get a haircut.” 

 

That may sound like an odd signal that I’m on to something big. 

 

But that’s the thought that pops into my head when I start closing in on a breakthrough. 

 

“I should get a haircut.”

 

I’ve come to recognize that bizarre thought as the way my fear tries to distract me from something BIG I need to be doing. 

 

I used to get that thought all the time when I was closing in on my big “80/20” breakthrough. 

 

And I still get it now and then…and I know if I can push through it, I’m going to discover something huge. 

 

We entrepreneurs like to think we’re world-beaters. We’re not afraid of anything. We’ve set out on our own and taken risks that the “quietly desperate” would never dream of taking. 

 

We are unafraid. Nothing can pierce our gladiator armor. 

 

But our fear knows that about us. 

 

So, it doesn’t attack us with obvious weapons. 

 

It attacks us with little poisonous blow darts like “I need to get a haircut.”

 

I don’t know what your personal “I need to get a haircut” is, but I know your fear holds you back in some area of your business. There’s something you know you should be jumping into with both feet, but you’ve held back. 

 

And the faster you admit it…and take action to manage and overcome that fear, the faster your business will grow.
