Now, on to the random marketing insights….

  1. Give your products space

The space-to-product ratio effect: use more empty space between products on display to increase their perceived value and beauty. In one of the experiments sales increased 98%.

2. Micro-influencers drive more sales (+ a surprise )

If your product is hedonic (e.g. fashion, high-end electronics), promoted posts from small influencers (10k to 100k followers) drive more sales than those of large ones (>1m followers).

3. High referral rewards = worse customers

Large referral rewards (e.g. Get $50 if you invite a friend) boost the referral rate (+750% in one experiment) but lower the average profitability of newly referred customers (-48%).

4. Frame your product as the 'gift' in a bundle

Frame a product as the 'free gift' in a bundle instead of the main product (e.g. "Buy softener and get Ariel detergent [primary product] free"). Sales were up to 78% higher in a series of experiments.

5. Far is prestigious, near is mainstream

If your brand is prestigious, place products far from the customer or model in an ad. If your brand is mainstream, position them close.

6. Say "Thank you" not "Sorry"

After a service failure, use appreciation ("Thank you for your patience") instead of an apology ("Sorry to keep you waiting") to improve satisfaction, repurchases, and word-of-mouth.

7. The "Sold-out" effect

Display some sold-out options to increase quality perceptions of your products and increase sales (31.1% more people said they would buy in one experiment). Don't show too many or the effect backfires

Perry Marshall Minute: The Greatest Threat Facing Every Entrepreneur

If there is any problem that keeps me up at night, it's the 95/5 network effect of the Big Four (Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple) being in bed with the government and the banks… having incalculable power over our lives.

  • Four unimaginably powerful monopolies own and control more than half the internet.


  • They can shoot you in the head and kill you with NO recourse. No number to call, no one to talk to, no one you can sue, no authority you can appeal to.


  • If you don't conform to their political, medical or financial views, you can be banned… but more insidiously, you can be "greylisted" and "grayballed." You can shout, but you're shouting in a well. Your message is heard by your nextdoor neighbors but won't make it to the next block, let alone around the world.


  • Internet businesses tend to be 90/10 and 95/5 which means most advertisers are perilously dependent on 1-2 major traffic sources and communication media – and WHEN (not if) you lose them, your oxygen gets cut off and you asphyxiate.


  • There is hardly any class of people less likely to arouse the sympathy of the public than advertisers – even though we are the lifeblood of the economy and of expanding employment.


  • The Big Platforms are systematically stripping advertisers of critical data and fostering helpless dependence.


  • Most entrepreneurs' personal and business networks are underdeveloped, so when the day comes that the eye of Sauron falls on YOU and takes YOU out, most people will collapse for lack of support.


At the Subversion Summit we will organize and display a panoply of alternatives for both acquiring customers and communicating with customers.


This is of urgent importance for any business for which the internet is your primary source of business.


Do not say to yourself "I'm not in MLM. I'm not a political activist. I'm not an anti-vaxxer, in fact I just got my booster shot last week."


This is not "only" for people who sell supplements or question vaccines or sell business opportunities… or have conservative-leaning views or are in favor of firearms or deal with finances.


Those are obvious ideal participants but hear ye hear ye: No one is immune.

Perry Marshall Minute: “We’re not going to listen to your crap anymore”

In my next newsletter, I present

We surveyed Roundtable members and asked them: "What is your most important success learning curve right now?"

We got 12 short, pithy answers that get to the heart of what it means to be a real entrepreneur in the 21st Century.

Here's a long one from Mark Riffey...

I was asking the question that was avoiding the real question, which is what we talked about at the last Roundtable meeting which is, "Are you gonna buy the business? Are you just gonna position yourself for equity?" Bob asked me last night, "Are we're going to talk about you buying the business yet, or not?"

So I got up in front of the group and said, "Somebody is gonna call me on this because I'm just avoiding the real question."

I just got some good old "We're not going to listen to your crap anymore. We can see right through you. You're transparent. So give us these answers."

I don't get these questions from anybody else.

I don't have such conversations with anybody else, even though I hang out with business owners all the time. We don't have these conversations. It's just different.

I knew that there were people in the group who had been down this road before. And I don't want to make egregious mistakes. I needed some advice from people like that.

I want to be able to have good conversations with people who aren't gonna accept my BS for what it is and ask me hard questions.


Ask yourself, "Do I think that way? Do I really have that perspective? Do I want that for my business?" Do I seek out people who will not accept my BS?"

In Planet Perry we ask the tough questions. We have minimal tolerance for BS.

If that rubs you the wrong way, go find some poodles to hang out with.

We are wolverines.

These are safe spaces where people can come and discuss issues without fear of being "shot at" by anonymous psychopaths

We need them in politics, business, and religion.

I attend a "bar church" once a month that's a great example of the DMZ concept.

You probably need one in your industry or your life.
