You've heard of the four stages of competence, right?
Unconscious incompetence: You don’t know what you don’t know. You not only don’t know the answers, you don’t even know the questions you should be asking. You’re in the bottom 80%.
Conscious incompetence: You know what you don’t know. You know what questions you should be asking, you just don’t know where to find the answers yet. You’re in the top 20%
Conscious competence: You know what you know. You’ve asked the right questions and gotten the right answers and you’re applying them. You’re in the top 5%.
Unconscious competence: You know what you know so well that you don’t even need to think about it in order to do it well. It’s muscle memory now. You’ve asked all the right questions and internalized the right answers so deeply that you’re in the top 1%.
If you’re a consultant, you can’t afford to be in those first two stages. You need to escape them TODAY. If you’re in those two stages, you’re a sitting duck waiting to be picked off.
Even if you’re “only” in the top 20% of your industry, you’re still going to get your knuckles sliced off by price-gouging clients looking for “free proposals”, “free consultations” and “low introductory fees” until “we see that things are working out.”
You can’t get stuck there. It’s the Dead Zone.
You have to move to stage 3 and 4 as fast as you can.
Because that’s where you call the shots. That’s where you set the prices. That’s where you decide who you will and will not consult with. That’s where the demand for you time exceeds the supply.
That’s where you achieve freedom.
And I don’t know anybody who has achieved…and helped me achieve…Stage 4 competence and freedom more than John Paul Mendocha.
