Mel,
One group of subjects were told they were "bakers" and would benefit if the price of wheat went down.
The other group of subjects were told they were "farmers" and would benefit if the price of wheat went up.
Both groups were then shown the SAME graph representing recent fluctuations in the price of wheat…
Then they were asked to predict what the price of wheat would do in the near future.
The "bakers" predicted the price would go down.
The "farmers" predicted the price would go up.
Scientists call this "motivated reasoning."
We call it wishful thinking.
But it's very real.
Even when the subjects know the scenario is FAKE!
And that brings up some very important questions for you, dear entrepreneur…
Are you positively motivated by your business? Of course you are.
Are you vulnerable to making inaccurate predictions and decisions based on this positive motivation? Of course you are.
And finally, and most importantly...
Are you consistently seeking the advice from discerning business experts from OUTSIDE your business who are NOT vulnerable to "motivated reasoning"?
If you are not, especially in THESE chaotic times…when making accurate predictions is harder than it's been in decades…well…
I don't know how you're going to avoid suffering some catastrophic leadership failures.
I've always believed in getting to the TRUTH…not the sale.
Over nearly 20 years, I've built my reputation on trust and truth.
I try to shine a burning hot ray of sunshine into the haze of motivated reasoning.
I try to stop entrepreneurs from rationalizing doing the WRONG things.
I try to give them wise counsel and encourage them to submit to accountability from OUTSIDE their organization.
I encourage them to have big dreams but always maintain their humility.
All of these are 100% necessary to avoid catastrophic leadership failure.
I do them all myself. I wouldn't be caught dead NOT in a high-level mastermind where sharp business people turn their steely, objective eyes on my business and blow away my "motivated reasoning."
At my next Perry Marshall: LIVE event (January 23 in San Diego) that's what I will deliver.
If you come prepared with a succinct description of your thorniest business problem, my "unmotivated reasoning" will give you a good answer…or reveal a better question you SHOULD be asking!
Guaranteed or your money plus $250 back.
Join us if you have the humility to seek unmotivated reasoning.
