So-Much-Easier Offline AdWords Conversion Tracking

Mel,

 

Which keywords brought you "tire kicker" leads? And which ones landed you $100,000 contracts?

If there's a telephone involved (as there always is with a $100,000 contract, and often a $1,000 sale) it's pretty murky. Well now it's much easier to find out.

Google AdWords now allows you to "connect the dots" and track offline conversions, with an easy tool. The person gets cookied, a special code gets passed along to you with the cookie, and you can selectively feed that data back into AdWords.

This is really useful for B2B lead generation - figuring out where the real buyers come from. Also good for regular commerce, figuring out the same thing - the quality customers vs. the tire kickers. Or even the complainers or serial refunders.

10% of the players get 90% of the clicks. The rest fight over the scraps.

I just talked to Richard Stokes of AdGooRoo.com. Rich monitors 40 million keywords and scrapes the ads, analyzing 40 billion dollars of Google's clicks.

75% of the clicks come from 10,000 advertisers.

It's not 80/20, it's 90/10. 90% of the traffic goes to less than 10% of the players. It's true on Bing too.

"Hey wait a minute," you say. "I thought the Internet was a level playing field."

It is. Everybody has access to the same experts, same tools, the same browsers, same computers, same everything. Anybody can spend 5 bucks, open a Google account and get started.

But here's the thing: 80/20 inequality is created by feedback loops. On the Internet, the feedback loops spin so much faster, victory tilts in favor of the winners. Fast.

ON THE INTERNET, WINNERS WIN BIG. The losers get nothin'.

In the brick and mortar world, if you can get 30-40% market share, you're Superman.

But on the Internet, Superman gets 80-90% market share. Just look at Google. Or Amazon. or Ebay. These companies completely dominate their space.

My 2 oldest boys are theater mavens. They just performed "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens. They had just 8 DAYS from tryouts to first performance.

Great Expectations is a 3 hour show! Everyone was floored that kids could memorize all those lines in a week, but they pulled it off.

The Power of the Display Network

Some time ago I wrote a landmark Renaissance Club newsletter called "From the Fringes to the Jet Stream." It described how clever Google ads "go viral" on the Display Network and get shown EVERYWHERE.

This "Display ads going viral" phenomenon is what I call the Jet Stream. Baby, when your ads enter the Jet Stream, WATCH OUT.

A few months later one of my customers, Amit Mehta, used that strategy to methodically test and build a Jet Stream campaign. For several months his website got 50,000 visitors per day.

To say his campaigns were profitable would be an understatement.

When you combine the Jet Stream concept with "filters" that pinpoint the right *kinds* of traffic on the Content Network, something magical happens. It's a form of time travel, because when you're 2 years ahead of most advertisers on the Content Network, you have access to massive quantities of traffic.
