Why you should only implement 10%

Mel,

A lot of people feel GUILTY. All the time.

Why?

Because they have all these courses, books and training, and have gone to a bunch of seminars and haven't hardly implemented any of it.

Guilt. Blame. Self condemnation.

Well, if you've done NONE of it, you *should* feel guilty, and get your hind end in gear.

But if you're like most successful people, you've done 10-20%, and you've probably skimmed the best cream off the top. So if you lock yourself in your cave resolving to do the other 80-90% before you get more education, you're violating 80/20. And you're stuck.

Case in point:

In my office I have something like 1000 books.

I've read maybe 200 of them cover to cover. I still have yet to crack 200 and the rest I've only skimmed.

That's about right. That's perfect 80/20 implementation. (It also means I've read several of them 5-10 times.)

I could completely stop going to masterminds, stop buying books, stop buying courses and attending seminars for the next 5 years. I suppose, in theory, I've got so much existing material I could just coast on that.

But I would never, ever do that. Ever. Here's why:

1) I am ALWAYS watching for the opportunity to sweep a $1 million strategy off the table, in favor of a $10 million strategy.

2) The books and information I've collected to date reflects my state of mind in this year, last year, the year before, etc. It does not reflect the evolution that I must make next year and beyond.

3) Quantum leaps always involve rejecting the good in favor of the great. Almost every quantum leap I've ever experienced has been a direct result of being with other people in a context of brotherhood and camaraderie and iron sharpens iron with highly competent, sharp people.

So when I go to a seminar or mastermind, if my mind is in top shape, I'm prepared to re-interpret everything I THINK I know in terms of some new, groundbreaking insight. I am actively looking for that insight.

That's how I keep my diamond-tipped saw blade sharp.

That's a strategy that will serve you well.

Perry Marshall

P.S.: Almost none of this has anything to do with "The internet is constantly changing" and all that hype. That is an extremely shallow reason. Yes, I could make that argument but frankly I'm not interested in learning much of ANYTHING that is going to be obsolete in a year. And you shouldn't either. Not unless you want to keep rebuilding your lame-o digital shanty town lemonade stand every six months for the rest of your life.

That is NOT what this is about. This is about expanding your capacity to absorb and implement deeper principles, larger strategies, and become so AGILE that nothing can stop you.

Are You Lazy Enough for Success?

Star Principle Seminar
September 28, Chicago
Apply Here

Mel,

Fill in the blank...

Selectivity, confidence and ______ are the nearest thing we have to a short formula for extraordinary achievement.

What would you guess?

  • Hard work?
  • Intelligence?
  • Luck?
  • Strength?
  • Faith?

Years ago, I would have said "hard work".

"Just keep your hand on the plow" ..."Idle hands are the devil's playground"... "Doing busy work is better than doing no work at all"... "Only slackers take days off" ... "The amount of work I do determines my value"...

But, in his excellent book, The 80/20 Manager, Richard Koch turns all that thinking on its ear. And he makes a bold statement that cuts at the heart of those old "truths" that seem to die so hard...

The battle goes not to the strong, not even to the most knowledgeable or the most intelligent, but to the most focused....

And who, according to Richard's keen observation, are most apt to achieve this all-important focus?

          The lazy.

He's referring to the lazy who also happen to possess high intelligence, thoughtfulness, originality and  vision.  But the lazy, nonetheless.

Of the notoriously "lazy",  Bruce D. Henderson, founder of Boston Consulting Group and Bill Bain, of Bain & Company, Richard has this to say...

Surely it's is significant that two of the most creative and influential management consultants of the last sixty years...were arguably the idlest.

In fact, there's a section near the end of his book titled "How to Make Yourself  Lazy" in which Richard recounts his own personal struggle to overcome the big, bad "Work Ethic" monster.

A monster he had to defeat in order to go from an 80-hour-per-week consultant worth a few million dollars, to a 5-hour-per-week investor worth over $200 million.

I still do battle with the work ethic monster each day. I bristle at the thought of ever being called "lazy". I'm sure you do too.

"Hard work is a virtue!" I protest.

But the older (and hopefully wiser), I get, the more I realize it is most decidedly not a virtue. The more work I delegate, eliminate, simplify and just flat-out refuse to perform, the more successful I become. And that's thanks to Richard's influence.

As Richard says, "Laziness, selectivity and confidence compound each other and are the nearest we can get to a short formula for extraordinary achievement."

So, while I'm probably going to keep working hard, I'm going to keep looking for ways to do it with more confidence and way more selectivity.

And if you'd like to discover how you can become more selective, more confident, more "lazy", and way more profitable...and hear it all directly from Richard Koch, apply to join us September 28 in Chicago.

Can You Tell Me Who Wrote This Email?

Mel,

As a matter of policy, we do not disclose whether I or my amazing ghost writer John Fancher writes any particular piece of copy.

I can tell you this, though: I handed out random samples of five Perry Emails and five John Emails to friends and family.

I asked them: Who wrote these, Perry or John?

Result:

Erin, good friend: 8 correct out of 10
Eldest son: 6 correct out of 10
#2 son: 0 correct out of 10
Daughter: 6 correct out of 10
Wife Laura: 2 correct out of 10.

Average score: they guessed right 44% of the time.

In other words, John sounds more like me to my closest friends and family members than I do :->

Warning: John is expensive. If you want to knock out a quickie $500 copyrighting job… Don't bother.

However, if you desire silky smooth, creamy email copy, lush with clever analogies and vivid pictures…

If you want someone who will channel your inner genius, a chameleon who is better at sounding like you than even YOU… Look no further.

His address is John@johnfancher.com

Who wrote this email...me or John? You decide.

Carpe Diem,

"You're Going to Pay Perry HOW MUCH?"

4-Man Intensive

June 5 & 6

ONE Seat Available

Apply Here

Mel,

Roundtable member, Megan Macedo, was asked a couple of days ago if it was difficult to convince her partner, Niall, of the fairly steep investment in Roundtable.

Here's how she answered...

"We were already members of one mastermind group, as well as another marketing group in the UK, so when I pitched the idea of paying $19K plus transatlantic travel to join Roundtable he was less than convinced.

He told me, 'If it were down to me, we wouldn't be going. I'd spend that 20 grand on other things.'

But he knew he had no choice. I'd told him when we agreed to team up earlier last year that I was going to Roundtable, no ifs, no buts. After the day I spent with Perry in London, and witnessing a couple of Roundtable meetings last year, I knew I needed to be in that room to take our business to the level.

So we went along to Orlando in January. Niall was prepared for a 'more of the same' mastermind group.

After the first couple of hot seats he leaned across and whispered 'I thought Perry would be, like, I dunno, talking more or something.'

By the end of the second day, we'd had our hot seat, and he'd really got it by then. 'The quality of the people in the room is astounding. I can see why Perry doesn't need to be talking all the time. There's so much value in the insights the other business owners have to offer too.'

Safe to say he was a convert. Of all the events and groups we've been to over the years, nothing comes close to spending a couple of days with Perry and the high quality business owners he attracts.

We're hopping on a plane to Chicago tomorrow for round 2. I know what questions we're bringing to the group, but I have no idea what direction our hot seat will take. You come asking questions about what you think is important, and Perry not only sees the questions beneath the question, he spots things that are far away in the distance that elevate your thinking and your business to an entirely new level. It's pretty special.

It's so special I find it difficult to put into words. That's why I didn't even bother trying to convince Niall. I just knew that all I had to do was get him in the room and he'd be completely sold. There was no doubt in my mind."

Both Roundtable groups are filled to capacity.  But if you'd like the next-best-thing, I have ONE seat open at my next 4-Man Intensive, June 5th & 6th.

Apply here.

Carpe Diem,
Perry Marshall

The Difference Between a "Star" and a J.O.B?

Is Your Business a Star?
Find out in 2 Minutes

www.StarPrinciple.com

Mel,

Got this from a reader of my 80/20 Sales & Marketing book...

"I am doing everything from selling to invoicing. Difficult to even have the time to think about (strategic) things. Had I not read the book over Christmas, I probably would not have taken the time to read it at all. 70 hour weeks and still 100 things we could do better, differently, not at all, instead, etc."

Most entrepreneurs succeed only in creating a new job for themselves.

And there's nothing wrong with that. Most of the time, being your own boss is way cooler than having to answer to somebody else.  Even if it means working 50% longer hours in your new "golden squirrel cage" than you did in your old Dilbert cube!

But, most entrepreneurs want more than just a new J.O.B.

You want to build something great.  Something that will last. Something that's attractive to investors and ultimately buyers. A sell-able business that can provide real freedom for you and your family. Not just a squirrel cage.

If that's what you're trying to build...or think you've already built...Richard Koch, in his brilliant book, The Star Principle,  offers 13 reality-check questions for you.

If you answer "yes" to most of these questions, you may have a STAR In the making...

1. Are your products or services delivered to the same high standard, on time, every time?

2. Is this year’s product measurably better than last year’s?

3. Does this year’s product costs at least 5 per cent less to make than last year’s?

4. Can you double volumes within a year without panic or loss of quality?

5. Is work delegated to the lowest-level person who is fully competent to do it?

6. Does everyone on your staff increase his or her skill level significantly each year and work better and faster?

7. Does your workplace exude calm, order and discipline?

8. Are your standards and procedures written down, clear, unambiguous ~ and observed?

9. Are your logos, colors and designs attractive and consistent?

10. Are your budgets always met or exceeded?

11. Is cash always higher than planned?

12. Is your company a machine ~ smooth-running, reliable, relentless, self-maintaining and self-improving?

13. Is nobody indispensable?  If your best people leave, will your company roll on regardless? Will new leaders come to the fore?

How'd you do?

If you'd like to take your company from J.O.B to a company that investors and buyers will pay a fortune for, join us in Chicago on September 28, for an exclusive seminar where Richard will help you do exactly that.

It's by application only. Apply here.

Carpe Diem,

Perry Marshall
