Lessons from The Atlantic's sponsored content brain fart
The Atlantic made an admittedly misguided decision to run a sponsored post from the Church of Scientology. Three key missteps should serve as lessons for publishers looking to grow sponsored content or other native advertising programs.

Guardian News & Media to launch digital Australia edition
What better way to expand your media empire than digitally? The Guardian is tapping the Australian market by investing in only a small local team for its Australia launch, while supplementing that team with its existing global digital network. The impact could be large (Australia's population is more than 22MM) while taking a relatively small financial risk, thanks to the company's existing digital infrastructure.

News organizations infringed on photographer's copyright of tweeted image
Beware media outlets: all that is published on Twitter is apparently not public domain. A U.S. District Court judge recently ruled that The Washington Post and Agence France-Presse violated copyright law by publishing images that photographer Daniel Morel posted on his Twitter account. "[T]he judge said that Twitter's terms of service did not give the news agency a license to publish the images without Morel's permission."

Facebook's new Graph Search
Facebook's new search product, Graph Search, (currently in beta and accepting user requests) may be restrained to a user's own Facebook ecosystem, but what will be the long-term implications for search capabilities? Graph Search will reportedly allow users to search for specific information across their networks' Timelines (e.g., Which of my friends are Miami Dolphins fans?) and could be a harbinger for the future of search should online privacy ultimately fail.

Branch encourages users to 'write like you talk'
Every publication should be seeking digital engagement from its audience, but that engagement can often be fragmented and sadly peters out on the wrong social platform. Perhaps the future of audience engagement will rely on a combination of audience commentary coupled with a collection of supporting examples from various digital sources. Online public conversation platform Branch is now open to the public, and encouraging discourse that is organic and supported by the ability to "pull in any content, like a tweet or a video, then expand on that subject by inviting other users via email or Twitter to the conversation."

Web comments aren't just popular — they're a good business
What does it mean when your audience comments on your content? Do other readers even look at the comments section? According to comment tool company Disqus, "42% of internet users read the comments after a story or contribute one of their own." The company claims that it is this comment-driven engagement that will generate revenue for publishers by drawing attention to strategically placed paid suggested reading and native advertising.

Preparing websites for the unexpected
Back when most web developers were using HTML, few, if any, were preparing for a day when their site had to look good on various sizes and layouts of screens. Now, we have the ability to plan and design for such disruptions, but what about all those older sites? Looks like there is a lot of work to do in order to catch up, and the overarching question developers and designers should be asking themselves is, "What makes content flexible?"

National brands beginning to think local on mobile
Location-based advertising is not just for small businesses, according to BIA/Kelsey's mobile ad revenue forecast. National brands are reportedly realizing the value of targeting messaging by location on mobile devices, with a predicted mobile advertising compound annual growth rate of more than 54%. But in order to measure effectiveness, BIA/Kelsey suggests crafting "campaigns to include click-to-call links or an easy way to get directions for those that rely on foot traffic."

Live 80/20 Force Multiplier Open Q&A Tuesday @11ET

Mel,

Tomorrow after 15 minutes of "stuff you urgently need to know" we're going to open up our webinar to YOUR questions and answer as many as possible.

Go here now to register.

Then at 3pm ET, the official 80/20 Force Multiplier training begins.

Here's what Ray Edwards of Spokane Washington said about last year's version of the course:

"I recommend the 8020 class every chance I get. I am practically an evangelist for this.

Some things that came directly out of that for me:

I was too busy to take the class. Ha ha. I took it anyway.

Cut my average workweek by about 20 hours.

More than doubled my income. Seriously. Almost triple.

Brought on two major, six-figure clients. Have two more knocking at my door right now. Literally booked solid.

Made room for me to become a major contributor in my church; but not the way you think. Yes, we give money. But what I'm speaking about is the fact that I've been free to lead financial peace classes, and be available in other ways, for my church. Wow.

Completed one manuscript for a book; started two more. Those are in progress.

Spoke on copywriting at Jeff Walker's recent Product Launch Formula live event. This would not have happened, if the 80/20 course had not allowed me to clear space for it. What I mean is: it's because of my clear focus, and my spending time on those 20% activities, that set me up to be ready, and to be invited, to speak at this key event.

Brought on a Virtual Assistant. She is my "8020 pressure valve".

I stopped doing things that I was good at, but that were not the highest use of my time. Major leverage point.

One of the major steps for me was thinking about outsourcing "little things." Lawn mowing, household chores, assembling new pieces of furniture! Any of the "stupid stuff" that ate my time and provided me no return on investment.

I'm fully on track to clear $1 million in revenue for next year!"

-Ray Edwards, Spokane Washington USA

80/20 Force Multiplier is two-thirds new. If you think you don't have time for this, that's reason #1 why you need to sign up. I don't play the "you're too busy and that's why you MUST do this" card often, but I'm playing it now. Because it's true.

By week 2 of the course you'll reclaim 2+ hours each and every day. Can you afford not to do that?

Register for the full 80/20 Force Multiplier course:
