Hugh Hefner, Hot Chicks & How to Change the World

A marketing mentor of mine once showed me a documentary on Hugh Hefner, the guy who invented Playboy magazine.

 

From what I can remember, the documentary made ol’ Hef out to be this shrewd and savvy marketer. And my mentor gleefully pointed out how we marketing wannabes could make millions by following Hef’s “innovative” advertising.

 

I squinted and scratched my head through the whole thing.

 

I kept thinking, “Does it really take a marketing genius to sell pictures of beautiful naked women to horny guys?”

 

Isn’t that like selling fresh sirloin to a pack of slobbering wolves?

 

I’m sure there were SOME insights in that doc that SOME marketers could leverage for personal gain and world domination. But I didn’t see any for me…or for you, if you’re a full-on Planet Perry entrepreneur.

 

Because, in our Planet, we’re not interested in turning a quick buck selling smut to the slobbering suckers.

 

I’ve long had a “no pills, poker or porn” policy for our 4-man Intensives and Roundtable groups.

 

What are we interested in Planet Perry?

  • Changing the world.
  • Building STAR businesses.
  • Improving lives.
  • Increasing the level of trust and hope.
  • An honest, healthy return for a kick-ass product or service.

And because we’re like this, the usual marketing “gimmicks” don’t work for us.

 

Period.

 

Because we’re out to accomplish something much grander than the average marketer, our strategies and tactics must be grander as well.

 

Or the hucksters will always win.

 

Click bait doesn’t work for us.

Steal and distribute doesn’t work for us.

Fill-in-the blank doesn’t work for us.

 

In fact, most of what they teach you in “copywriters class” will backfire on you and spark the fires of your eventual immolation.

 

No, if you’re engaged in an endeavor of a loftier nature than tossing garbage at rabid raccoons then you need influence, thought leadership, and prestige.

 

But most of us are aping the trash flingers.

 

Most of us want to be influential but we’re making mistakes non-influential writers make.
