Perry Marshall Minute: “My wife thinks it’s so funny…”

"...I act like I'm getting some sort of secret FBI information in the mail!"

Mel,

"When I get the New Renaissance newsletter in the mail, I always get so excited. My wife thinks it's so funny, because I act like I'm getting some sort of secret FBI information in the mail!"

-Nick Laiuppa, digital marketing expert and long-time Planet Perry citizen

I hear something like Nick's comment quite often. The other thing I hear is people take the newsletter off to a quiet spot with a highlighter or notebook and really dig in.

Jo Schaer, another digital marketing expert, has a whole "ritual" about reading the newsletter.

Now, I'm not telling you this to brag about how awesome my newsletter is (at least that's not the ONLY reason)...

The main reason I'm telling you this is to point out the level of ATTENTION you can get…from your best prospects or customers…with a good printed newsletter.

Think about the level of attention you get on a Facebook ad…an Instagram post…a TikTok ad.

All those methods of advertising can be effective but the level of attention you get there is MICROSCOPIC.

The speed at which people thumb through those apps? You're lucky if you get ONE SECOND of attention.

But a good newsletter?

Well, Jo, for example, takes her copy off to a quiet, relaxing place, shutting out all distractions, sips a cup of tea, and digs into the newsletter studiously and ravenously.

Even if she's reading it REALLY fast (and she's not) that's probably at least 10 whole minutes of undivided attention I get from one of my BEST customers every single month.

It may not sound like a lot, but it is a TON…

Compare it to the hummingbird-wing-flap level of attention you get on social media.

A fraction of a second vs. 10 minutes?

That's 600 times the level of attention! 1000 times more if they read it slowly.

Heck, even this email you're reading right now is called the Perry Marshall MINUTE for a very good reason: To expect more than a minute of attention on any internet marketing medium is the height of hubris and/or folly.

How can you use direct mail to grab more precious attention from your best prospects and customers?

This is $1,000 per-hour thinkin'. Do some of it this week.

And, if you're not already subscribed to my New Renaissance letter, go here to get it.

Seize the day,

Perry

Perry Marshall Minute: Can you do this once a quarter?

A few years ago, I was on the wild and windswept Blasket Island...

Mel,

A few years ago, I was on the wild and windswept Blasket Island off the coast of southwestern Ireland. I and a small handful of friends were on a sort of pilgrimage to this desolate and breathtakingly beautiful spot.

This particular day, I had a short conversation with my friend Geraldine and then wandered up a nearby hill. I had a little conversation with the "head office" and came up with an idea for a program that gets more rave reviews than just about anything I've ever done. 30-Day Reboot.

My best ideas come from immersive experiences like this and I try to put as many potentially immersive experiences in my calendar as I can. I know I need them.

What counts as an immersive experience?

Here's my definition…

  • You should not sleep in your own bed during the experience
  • It should be far from your home
  • It should in a place very different from your home…a foreign country if possible
  • It should involve mostly people you don't normally spend your days with and you should break bread and tell stories with these people
  • The activities you engage in should include a MINIMUM (if any) of the work you do day-to-day with plenty of time for reflection
  • It should have a purpose greater than just "let's get away and sip umbrella drinks on the beach for a few days."

Nothing wrong with sipping Mai Tais on the beach, I just think it's too easy to slip into "vegging out on the couch watching TV" mode when you do that.

If you can schedule experiences with 4 or more of the elements listed above, at least once a quarter, I can almost guarantee you'll see an uptick in the number of brilliant ideas you get. And the number of fascinating and strategic partnerships you'll develop.

I once spent two nights in a convent! That counts.

Immersive experiences are truly magical.

And, as part of New Renaissance Club, you get hefty discounts on the immersive experiences I offer.

Perry Marshall Minute: Dave’s 30-Second Market Research Method

Mel,

My friend and long-time Planet Perry guy, Dave Jabas, once told my Roundtable group a quick, effective, and simple way to determine how much you can sell a new product for.

You go to someone that you know would be a good customer for your product. You show them the product or service. Then you ask, "What would you pay for something like this?"

If they answer "$2,000," you say, "If you'll write me a check right now, you can have it for $1000."If they write you a check for $1000, you know you can sell it for AT LEAST $1000 to your other good customers, probably more. Maybe a LOT more.

If they do not write you a check for $1000? You know two things. 1. That customer just told you a white lie. 2. You definitely should NOT try to sell it for $2000.

OK, it's not scientific market research with multivariate testing and focus groups.

But in some ways it is MUCH better than all that.

Because it's faster, less expensive, and more human.

Use it wisely. And maybe pay Dave a royalty when your product launch succeeds :)

In my book Detox Declutter & Dominate, on page 16-19 (Step 2 of the 7 Steps to Entrepreneurial Freedom), I dig into the "calculus" of making more money from your customers…without having to find MORE customers.

And no, this "calculus" is not complex. It's almost as simple as Dave's method.

And you get access to a calculator that will do it for you anyway.

Day in the Life of Perry (Video 6)

Mel,

Everything can be raised to the level of "art."

In fact, most entrepreneurs in Planet Perry approach their businesses as artists…even if they don't think of themselves that way.

Chances are, you're an artist too.

Watch today's video to get my definition of business art, and why it's so important to your success.

Perry Marshall Minute: Don’t wait for the next catastrophe to get clarity

Mel

"I used to spend a lot of time on Facebook, promoting live, local events. It was the best platform for that. Well, in 2020 those events were all scrapped. But for a while I kept going to Facebook several times a day. Scrolling, scrolling, scrolling, keep them doggies scrolling, RAWHIDE!"

But, I'm subject to depression. Facebook is depressing. 2020 was no time to be screwing around with anything that made me MORE depressed. So I got off. Now that some live events are picking back up, I'm not going back. I know I'll find a better way."

-Jason

If anything good came from 2020, it's this…

Some used the extra time to take a loooong look at their lives and ask, "What's really important here?"

What is trivial?

What is a total waste of my time?

What actually contributes to my long-term success, and mental, physical and emotional wellbeing?

Which of my "friends" is a true friend and which are just "Facebook friends"?

And many who did this were surprised at the results.

They did NOT miss Facebook. Friends they THOUGHT were "ride or die" were not.

Day to day activities which seemed important and urgent…just…weren't.

They say that when you have a near-death experience, you come back realizing that most things we sweat and worry and struggle for…are just silly.

I watch how foolishly man guards his nothing…

Here's my million dollar advice: Don't wait until the next "2020" to do this. Don't wait for a near-death experience to do this.

In my book Detox, Declutter & Dominate, I show you the Planet Perry way to do this. It's our playbook for life freedom and entrepreneurial success…our way. It's free with your New Renaissance subscription.

Perry Marshall Minute: He skipped the heroin part…

Mel,

About 10 years ago, I held a seminar called "Rainmaker Alchemist." At the event, a guy I knew fairly well, but not really well, presented a rather expensive business opportunity.

Several attendees stroked him a big check. Seminar was a big success. We all went home to live happily ever after.

Or so we thought.

Naturally, the people who bought the program were supposed to get their stuff. And we were supposed to get our cut of the deal from this guy.

Weeks passed.

No delivery. No money. No replies to emails. Or replies with lame excuses.

Long story short. I lost a lot of money and I had to work my butt off to make it right to my customers who got screwed. (The full story appears in one of my newsletters).

What happened to the guy who sold the stuff and bailed? He was addicted to opioids.

It's the usual story of America's profoundly devastating and horrific opioid crisis…

Doctor prescribes Oxycontin for pain, the patient gets addicted, can't get enough from legal sources, turns to illegal sources, eventually turns to heroin, dies.

I don't think this guy ever got to the "heroin" stage. I believe he skipped that stage and went straight to the "dies" stage.

I don't know. I just know he's dead.

I used to think drug addicts were just morally weak. No will power. Bad people.

Not anymore. The older I get the more I realize we are all addicted.

It might be opioids, it might be sex, it might be work, it might be a person, it might be money, it might be friggin' Sudoku for crying out loud.

We're all addicted. Some addictions just kill you (physically) faster than others.

I believe the most powerful mentally, physically, financially and emotionally addictive thing on the planet is…

Your phone and the internet it enables you to access.

Doubt me at your own peril.

It may not lead you to bailing on your financial commitments, slipping into substance abuse, or death…but sometimes the most powerful addictions are the ones we don't know we have.

The best trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

In New Renaissance Club you get a copy of my book Detox, Declutter & Dominate: How to Excel by Elimination as part of your membership, delivered to your door with your first issue of my newsletter.

In Planet Perry we believe in identifying addictions, clutter, and head trash.

We believe that clearing them out is $1,000 per hour…$10,000 per hour…and even $100,000 per hour work.

Perry Marshall Minute: Paul’s Dry-uary Clarity

Mel,

A few years ago, my friend Paul was going a little bonkers. Fighting with his girlfriend constantly. Fired from his job for a minor infraction. Mid 30s and feeling like he had made no progress in a decade. Crashing at John's place because he had nowhere else to go.

This was late December of 2016.

Have you heard of something called "Dry-uary"?

I never had. I guess it's a fairly common practice, post-holidays. You don't drink alcohol in January. Paul decided that was a good idea to try.

Well, the clarity he got from a few weeks of not imbibing…and the decision to get out of cold, miserable Chicago and visit his brother in sunny Los Angeles…made him think.

"Maybe I should stick with this detox thing."

Paul is in recovery now.

I'm not saying Paul's life is perfect or that he's not had his problems since sobering up…he has.

But I do wonder what would have happened to him if he had not detoxed and decluttered his life enough to get that clarity he needed.

When we stay in the toxicity, in the clutter, in the day-to-day, in the distractions…we never see the magical mystical forest for all the gnarly trees.

And this applies to any clutter. Any toxicity. Any distraction.

The greatest distraction of all time is the device that you are very likely reading this message on right now.

There have never been more distractions, clutter, and toxicity to deal with than right now, 2022. And there is no reason to think it will get any calmer or clearer any time soon.

It will almost certainly get worse. Much worse.

My advice…

Do a massive email unsubscribe TODAY

  1. Delete all but the most essential apps on your phone TODAY
  2. Don't even look at your phone until Noon everyday…maybe even later…starting TODAY
  3. Start your day with Renaissance Time. EVERY DAY
  4. Focus on THREE things you want to accomplish each day. Not 37 or 377.

Planet Perry is about subtraction. Detoxing. 80/20. Simplifying.

I am committed to making your life simpler, not more complicated.

This is how you will change the world. By "drying out"!

I know it's January 16th. A bit late to start your Dry-uary. But better late than never.

In New Renaissance you get my book Detox, Declutter & Dominate: How to Excel by Elimination. It contains my 7 Steps to Entrepreneurial Freedom.

7. Not 77. Not 777.

Perry
