Mel,
A few years ago, I was on the wild and windswept Blasket Island off the coast of southwestern Ireland. I and a small handful of friends were on a sort of pilgrimage to this desolate and breathtakingly beautiful spot.
This particular day, I had a short conversation with my friend Geraldine and then wandered up a nearby hill. I had a little conversation with the "head office" and came up with an idea for a program that gets more rave reviews than just about anything I've ever done. 30-Day Reboot.
My best ideas come from immersive experiences like this and I try to put as many potentially immersive experiences in my calendar as I can. I know I need them.
What counts as an immersive experience?
Here's my definition…
- You should not sleep in your own bed during the experience
- It should be far from your home
- It should in a place very different from your home…a foreign country if possible
- It should involve mostly people you don't normally spend your days with and you should break bread and tell stories with these people
- The activities you engage in should include a MINIMUM (if any) of the work you do day-to-day with plenty of time for reflection
- It should have a purpose greater than just "let's get away and sip umbrella drinks on the beach for a few days."
Nothing wrong with sipping Mai Tais on the beach, I just think it's too easy to slip into "vegging out on the couch watching TV" mode when you do that.
If you can schedule experiences with 4 or more of the elements listed above, at least once a quarter, I can almost guarantee you'll see an uptick in the number of brilliant ideas you get. And the number of fascinating and strategic partnerships you'll develop.
I once spent two nights in a convent! That counts.
Immersive experiences are truly magical.
And, as part of New Renaissance Club, you get hefty discounts on the immersive experiences I offer.
