Mel, Do you have one of those friends who figures out what he thinks about something as they talk about it? Maybe you're one of those people? My friend Kurt is like that. He starts talking about something, goes off on tangents, chases rabbits down rabbit holes, gets distracted by shiny objects. I drop "mental breadcrumbs" as he wanders so when he inevitably says, "What were we talking about again?" I can find our way back. It used to be annoying and exhausting. But now I realize it's how he processes ideas, opinions, thoughts. I'm helping him think…just by letting him talk. He doesn't know what he thinks about something until he expresses it out loud to another human being. Roundtable member Rocco DAmico was recently doing his Tactical Triangle Review with us and on the call he said, "It just helps to talk this out with someone else. Even if the other person doesn't have any brilliant ideas. It brings clarity. It helps me think about it better." It happens to me all the time while someone else is talking. I'll be listening and something they say will spark an idea. So, I pull out my little notebook and jot it down. (I ALWAYS carry a notebook and pen). Sometimes the idea that pops into my head is totally UNRELATED to anything they've said…but there is just something magical about live, in-person conversations that makes your brain work in new and exciting ways. You can't get that from a book or an online coaching program. (And this from a guy who has written several books and sells coaching programs!) Even if you're an introvert who likes to stay hidden in your lair of solitude, you need to have conversations with sharp, live humans to get and hone your best ideas.
