Yahoo to acquire Tumblr for $1.1 billion
The board of Yahoo agreed on Sunday to buy the popular blogging service Tumblr for about $1.1 billion in cash, the New York Times reported. For Yahoo, buying Tumblr would be a bold move as CEO Marissa Mayer tries to breathe new life into the company. Tumblr has over 108 million blogs, with many highly active users.

Is Tumblr the next Geocities?
Yahoo's $3.57 billion acquisition of Geocities in 1999 can be seen as a lens through which to consider a Yahoo/Tumblr merger because it followed a similar blueprint to the story currently developing. One challenge for Yahoo will be in dealing with some of the less advertising-friendly content on Tumblr's sites.
