Mel,
Several years ago, sitting around at a mastermind group, a bunch
of us got the brilliant idea to write Wikipedia entries for each other.
At the time, I was certifiably internet famous...when that meant even less than it means now. I had my Definitive Guide to Google Adwords ebook out. I had wowed the crowds at all the geekiest internet marketing seminars. My Adwords coaching and consulting business was really starting to zoom. Everyone in my little world knew who I was and thought I was awesome.
But not the folks at Wikipedia. I got a terse message from them:
This appears to be a vanity posting and will be removed until verifiable, objective evidence is provided that this subject meets our notability guidelines.
(Emphasis mine.)
Translation? We don't know who the heck you are...prove you're somebody.
I coveted that entry and so should you. Wikipedia is the sixth most visited site on the ENTIRE Internet, it's a site that one study found ranks in the top 5 results for 96% of noun searches. For some, it can be SEO gold.
So, I did two things. First, I started working on getting those verifiable third party citations in The New York Times, USA Today, and other respected sources.
And second, I hired a Wikipedia expert. I'll call her Madame X for now.
Madame X wrote and continues to edit my Wikipedia entry to make it bullet proof. And since approximately 1,000 entries get deleted every. single. day...that's no small order.
She tough and she knows her stuff...
She's been editing Wikipedia entries since 2005.
She's been a confirmed editor since 2008.
She's made about 10,000 edits to Wikipedia entries
She's created or helped create dozens of articles (mostly biographies of living people, the most challenged category on the site!)
She serves on the panel that mediates disagreements about biographies and decides which biographical articles to delete.
In short, she's a Wikipedia rock star.
And on November 6, she'll be joining me for a quick-hit webinar we're calling How to Make Sure Your Entry Isn't Sabotaged by Passive-Aggressive Thugs (& How to Get an Entry if You Don't Have One!). Should you be on the world's most common search engine result site?
