Blowing Up the Orphan Torture Rack

Headtrash Transformation

Today, June 9, 3PM Eastern

Only $99 - Register Here

Mel,

Ever pull an “all-nighter” studying for finals in college?

Did you ever have a time when you had a “big nut” to hit to meet all your financial commitments by the end of the month?

When you think of those times, what do you feel? A big ball of anxiety in your gut? A pounding in your temples? Clammy palms?

There’s an assumption, an orphan assumption, that you can only meet big nuts with a requisite ball of stress sliding up and down your throat.

The Inner Orphan cannot conceive of any way to achieve a big nut easily and painlessly.

The Inner Orphan says, “In order to hit my nut, I’m going to have to discount my prices, choke down client work like the guy on Man vs. Food who chows down 46 chicken wings, and toil 17 hours a day to get it all done.”

The orphan will never say, “I’m going to hit the nut by raising my prices and landing one big fat client who will erase my shortfall with one massive check.”

Why does it have to go the orphan’s way?

Why do we have to pull the all-nighter to get the A in Chemistry 101?  Why can’t we believe a sugar daddy client will just “show up”?

I’ll tell you why. Because the orphan programs you to believe you have to earn it. And the only way to earn something in the twisted orphan mentality is to strap yourself to a torture rack.

I’m not saying that there’s no place for hard work. Far from it. What I’m saying is the orphan restricts our options for solving problems by insisting that grinding it out is the ONLY option!

If you want to discover alternatives to the “orphan strategies” that have been sabotaging your success…get the details here.

Carpe diem,

Perry Marshall

Is Your Traffic Obsession a Cry for Help?

Head Trash Transformation

Tuesday, June 9, 3PM Eastern

Just $99! Register Here

Mel,

“It’s five times more expensive to sell to a new customer than it is to sell to an existing one.”

We’ve all heard the cliché hundreds of times, right?

And yet, most entrepreneurs would rather spend time and money chasing after new customers. Getting us to focus on conversion and follow-up and selling to current customers is like pulling teeth. It’s just not as sexy as traffic, I guess.

I used to think it was about the “thrill of the hunt”. Entrepreneurs must be hunters not gardeners, I presumed. But whatever it is, I know for a fact that in my own business nothing sells better than traffic programs.

And nothing makes people hit the snooze button more times than “customer retention” programs.  Autoresponder Bootcamp remains one of my best-kept secrets.

I wonder if the irresistible traffic itch isn’t an “Inner Orphan.” Is it wrapped up with deep-seated abandonment issues?

My customers will eventually find out I’m a fraud. They’ll abandon me. They’ll see right through me, so why waste time cultivating them?

So the everlasting hunt for new customers stalks forward…and the old customers just shuffle in and out of the revolving door.

But, they were going to leave anyway, right?  What a convenient self-fulfilling prophecy.

This “I’m a fraud” thing isn’t overt. People don’t come right out and say “I’m a fraud and everybody is going to find out.” They just doubt their worth. Afraid of being known. Found out. This always comes up whenever you raise prices. You can pretty much count on most peoples’ Inner Orphans to NOT allow them to overcharge you. 80% of the time that’s true.

My victory over this particular orphan has been a big door opener. I’m known as the AdWords guy (traffic), but I’ve always cultivated my customers and expected them to stay around and buy more.

I made my name with traffic. I built my business with follow up.

Do you expect your customers to abandon you?

And do you believe that big wins can only come down the narrow path of hard work, stress and massive anxiety?

If so, that’s a piece of bad “head code” that needs to be de-bugged.

And I'll show you how to de-bug it on Tuesday. Click here to save your spot.

Carpe diem,

Perry Marshall

Did John's Anxiety Cause a Snowstorm in Philly?

Head Trash Transformation

Tuesday, June 9, 3PM Eastern

Only $99 -- Register Here

Mel,

Big days. Big projects. Big events. Some of us have an Inner Orphan that whispers to us, “If it’s a big deal (good or bad), you must stress out about it.” If we don’t experience a certain degree of anxiety, stress, and even paranoia, then we’re not “doing it right.”

Sometimes the ‘freaking out’ manifests in some pretty bizarre ways.

John Fancher’s career (copywriter for Planet Perry) has taken an upturn in the last couple of years. This upturn is due in part to his victories over some personal demons.

But, when things go well for John, his “Inner Orphan” really wants to act up.

I recently invited John to a mastermind group I’m part of. All members are heavy hitters. All run companies that are 10 or even 100 times the size of John’s. I knew it would be a stretching experience for John. But good for him.

He emailed me saying, “I’m intimidated.”

I wrote back, “It’s supposed to be intimidating. That’s how you know it’s a good mastermind group.”

On the surface, John was optimistic about coming.

But strange things started happening as the meeting approached.

First he got sick. John rarely gets sick. Full on head cold, chest cold. Hacking and wheezing. The works.

OK, that’s not such a crazy coincidence since this was January in Chicago.

But then the personal demons started beating their drums and blowing their kazoos. John said the “triggers” were more powerful than they had been for years…incessant…to the point where it was difficult for him to sleep.

When you’re ill, the last thing you need is more stress and less sleep!

Then, the weirdest part of all: John got to O’Hare for his flight to Orlando and found out it was delayed EIGHT HOURS.

John had planned to arrive in Orlando with ample time to check into the hotel, have dinner and get to bed at a reasonable hour. Now, his plane would arrive in Orlando at 4AM.

Reached the hotel at 5 am. Slept until 7 am.

Sick, working on two hours of sleep, mixing and mingling with an intimidating bunch of people he’s never met. (An introvert’s dream!)

I’m not saying John’s Inner Orphan caused the snowstorm in Philadelphia that delayed his flight from Chicago to Orlando by 8 hours.

(Though I wouldn’t absolutely rule out the possibility!)

But I am saying our Inner Orphans can do some pretty bizarre stuff. When situations arise that don’t fit their interpretation of reality they can throw a tantrum.

There was zero reason this “big day” had to be met with “big anxiety.” Consciously at least, John agreed. But subconsciously, his Inner Orphan was screaming, “Hey mom, why aren’t we freaking out? We should be freaking out!"

If you have a nagging tendency to meet big days with big stress, join us Tuesday to find out why. And discover how to pre-empt and prevent that self-sabotage in the future.

Get the details here.

Carpe diem,

Perry Marshall

Can Your Business Add a 3rd, 4th and 5th Gear?

4-Man Intensive

August 13-14

Chicago

To Apply email Josh@PerryMarshall.com

Mel,

“We had a really difficult problem. Perry pulled our business apart and put it back together again. It’s going to completely transform our business. It’s going to take about 30% of the time we currently spend on our business and it’s going to at least double our income”

-Daryl Grant, after her 4-Man Intensive

After 15 plus years of studying hundreds of small businesses, here's what I've noticed...

A small business is like a car with only 1st and 2nd gear.

If you want to drive that car faster, you must burn out the engine doing 50 mph in 2nd gear.  And since that “engine” is probably YOU, it's YOU that gets burned out.

On the other side of the race track is the venture capital world. They pump tons of money into a business that hasn't proven it can sell anything.

That's like starting a car in 3rd or 4th gear.  It stalls out at the starting line.

My vision:  Bridge the Two Worlds.  Give small business entrepreneurs, like you, the insights and tools that will give them a 3rd, 4th and 5th gear.

So, my 4-Man Intensive used to be about tweaking and tuning and optimizing...

  • And sure, sometimes we still dig into your AdWords account and adjust it until you're dominating your keywords...
  • And sometimes we still fine-tune your sales copy until it sucks in more sales...
  • And sometimes we still tweak and twist your website until it's humming like a Formula One race car...

But now we do way more than that.

We now start your 4-man “hot seat” with a scoreboard. We determine your company's STAR potential. Then we ask, “What do you need to do to scale this up 10 or even 100 times?"

We look for the opportunities to grow your business by leaps and bounds while at the same time reducing the amount of time you spend working in your business!

Just like we did for Daryl. She now works half the time and makes twice the money.

That’s what it means to add more gears to your vehicle.

Does your business qualify for a 3rd, 4th or 5th gear?

If you think it does, contact Josh today at Josh@perrymarshall.com to apply.

Carpe diem,

Perry Marshall

Why the Rat Kept Hitting the Crack

Mel,

Remember those anti-drug commercials back in the 1980s?

The Partnership for a Drug-Free America ran a series of public service announcements showing a rat in a cage. The voice over said something like, “Only one drug is so addictive that laboratory rats use it and use it and use it until dead. It’s called cocaine and it can do the same to you.” All while showing images of a poor white rat shuddering and dying.

A lurid demonstration of how powerful and dangerous the addictive chemicals in cocaine can be.

Point well made.

Or was it?

In his book, Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs, Johann Hari tells of another experiment with rats and cocaine.

Only this time, they didn’t put one lonely rat in a bare cage. They put many rats together and gave them lots of interesting things to do.

Result?

The rats didn’t hit the cocaine nearly as hard. Addiction and death rates were only 25% what they were in the “isolation” experiments.

Now, of course, the second experiments don’t prove that cocaine is not dangerous.

They prove that addictive substances are far less dangerous to us when we have a support system. When we have accountability. Connection. And lots of rewarding, non-addictive activities to engage in.

There’s a reason I refer to the entrepreneurial addiction to work ethic as a “hamster wheel.”

When all you have in your cage is cocaine, you’re going to hit that pipe. When all you have in your cage is the wheel, you’re going to spin and spin and spin until dead.

When you’re not connected to others who also trying to put down the crack pike of 60-hour weeks, you’re going to smoke up. You’re going to jump back on that wheel to nowhere.

Which is why I’ve developed Star Simplifier Lab.

In Star Simplifier Lab, we’ll connect you with a tight community of entrepreneurs committed to simplifying their businesses. Committed to Star-ifying their businesses. Committed to getting off the hamster wheel for good.

And the lab comes complete with built-in accountability. Brought to you by Planet Perry’s implementation secret weapon, Rebecca Hannan.

Rebecca edited the Star Principle Seminar book and transcript, and also added numerous diagrams and illustrations. And she is our Master of Implementation.

Rebecca is a world-class expert on both Meyers-Briggs personality types and Planet Perry’s own Marketing DNA Test. At the lab, she will assess you and your staff and develop a custom plan for…

  1. How to implement Richard Koch's Star and Simplify formulas within your own unique situation.
  2. How to interact with your staff members - what you will do, what you will delegate, who you will delegate to, and how you ensure that tasks get crossed off the list.

Time to break out of isolation. Get connected. Get accountability. Get support. Simplify. And Star-ify.

Why You Crap on Christmas

80/20 Head Trash Transformation

Tuesday, June 9, 3PM Eastern

Only $99--Register Here

Mel,

Ever crap on Christmas? Ever have a big, ripe, juicy strawberry just sitting there ready to savor, and then just…squash it? Step on it? Pulverize it?

One of the main reasons I got to escape the Dilbert Cube and hang out my own shingle was that we sold the company I was at for $18 million.

I got a ripe, juicy check. Cashed it. Became my own boss. Never looked back.

But in the days leading up to that big sale, I did EVERYTHING I could to sabotage it.

Crazy, inexplicable, downright stupid stuff.

Inside, I was a seething Incredible Hulk looking for stuff to SMASH.

Everything inside me revolted, subconsciously, against the idea of Perry finally cashing in BIG.

Why?

If you've ever snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, you may have asked yourself the same question, "Why? Why do things seem to fall apart just as they're getting good? Why do I feel nauseous asking for the big check? Why does everybody else seem to get it...but nothing ever clicks for me?"

If you've ever asked those questions, I think I know the answers.

And I'll show you how to find them here.

Carpe diem,

Perry Marshall

How to "Count Google's Cards" (without Getting your Kneecaps Busted)

Mel,

Ever hear of counting cards in black jack?

It's not illegal. But the casinos frown upon it.

More than a few sharks have had their kneecaps "adjusted" for counting cards...and winning a little too big.

And there's a way to count Google's cards too. And it's legal. And the "Big G" won't even know you're doing it. Even when you cash in big.

How do I know? Because I've seen WordStream do it. Larry Kim has built his business helping other small businesses get profitable with AdWords – they know how to stack the deck and count Google's cards.

So how can you crack the bank at the Google casino?

First, get a snapshot of where you’re at NOW using the FREE AdWords Performance Grader – it will show you how strong or weak your “hand” is so you can calculate the next best move.

From there, you can grab a free trial of WordStream Advisor which will expose the quickest, most efficient way to boost profits with paid search ads (it puts the 80/20 principle into action).

Get it all here.
