Bonhoeffer, costly grace, and how to NOT become a martyr

While he did visit those pockets of refuge, he ultimately decided… I must live through this difficult period in our national history with the people of Germany. I will have no right to participate in the reconstruction of Christian life in Germany after the war if I do not share the trials of this time with my people ... Christians in Germany will have to face the terrible alternative of either willing the defeat of their nation in order that Christian civilization may survive or willing the victory of their nation and thereby destroying civilization. I know which of these alternatives I must choose but I cannot make that choice from security.  As you know, he and his fellow Abwehr conspirators failed. And at dawn on April 9,1945 Bonhoeffer was executed…and most likely tortured mercilessly before he finally expired.  I've always admired Bonhoeffer for his adherence to what he called "costly grace" and his attacks on "cheap grace." Bonhoeffer believed you must work for the things you believe in even if it means risking everything…comfort, wealth, security, life. Do I believe that my Dark Horse strategies would have helped Bonhoeffer succeed?  No. The enemy was just too powerful, too evil. And Bonhoeffer's resources and influence were too scant. But I believe he did the right thing. I admire his refusal to run…to stay and fight even with no chance of victory. Because it was RIGHT.  What you are doing is RIGHT.  Hopefully your struggle is not as doomed as Bonhoeffer's.  Hopefully your influence and impact will not be posthumous like Bonhoeffer's, but antemortem. Hopefully your grace will not be as costly.  I want to breathe more life into that hope. I want to give you weapons, strategies and tactics that will prevent you from being a "martyr" for your cause. I want you to overthrow the regime, infiltrate the halls of power, and incite the change you want to see.  The change the world needs to see.  Let's do this….
